Her Story Carissa's Version Where a misconception is challenged by directness: two strangers met in a pew without a word, then everything changed in the next interaction.It was a hot summer evening, and the church seminar was packed. I arrived late, tapped the nearest person, and whispered to ask if there was space for my sister and me. There were empty spots next to him, so I figured it would be fine. Tyler shifted over, and shortly after I sat down, I started overheating. Something felt off. I looked down and realized my leg was pressed against my sister’s, and on my other side Tyler was sitting far too close, spread out and practically touching me. I immediately felt irritated.I thought, I can’t ask him to move again. I already bothered him by squeezing in. But seriously, how does he not realize he’s way too close? I sat there sweating, trying to focus on the speaker. We never spoke that night. I assumed if he wanted to talk, he would have introduced himself afterward, but I left. I was tired of being the one to pursue anything and wanted someone who would be direct with me.On the drive home, my sister asked if I had talked to the guy next to me. I told her, “No, he didn’t introduce himself, so I wasn’t going to. I’m not interested in dating someone introverted.” Beth just shook her head and said, “I’m done with you. I’m no longer your wingwoman.”The next night, I walked back into church for the second day of the seminar. As I stepped inside, I saw someone walking out, Tyler. This time, he confidently introduced himself. I was taken aback: he didn’t seem shy at all, but direct… and cute. Maybe I had the wrong impression of this guy, I thought.My friend Kara walked up and filled the silence I suddenly couldn’t fill because I had no idea what to say to this handsome man. We eventually parted ways. I knew he attended the other church, Plymouth, and figured if he was interested, he would pursue me.Two weeks later, I saw him again at church. Since he had initiated the first time, I walked up to him and started a conversation. To my surprise, it was easy and comfortable, fluid, even. I thought for sure he would ask for my number, but he didn’t. I wondered if he was playing hard to get or just trying not to come across as a stalker. Either way, I figured if he was truly interested, he’d make it clear.Later, I was invited to a Labor Day event and had no idea we shared a mutual friend. When I walked into the Ahumadas’ home, the first person I saw was Tyler.And would you believe, it was then that he finally asked for my number.He made his intentions unmistakably clear.Our shared love of coffee led to our first date.A series of dates brought us here today. His Story Tyler’s Version (the correct version) It all started on a hot summer night at Carissa’s church after a sermon so long I’m convinced it added at least three extra years to my life. I slid over to make room for this stunning woman who’d sat down next to me. I didn’t even look at her, but somehow I knew.Unfortunately, I didn’t scoot over quite far enough. And, apparently… I may have been manspreading a little.(In my defense, I had no idea. In her defense, it was like a hundred degrees.)The next night, at the very end of service, I introduced myself, then proceeded not to say anything until a mutual friend stepped in to rescue the conversation. I took one look at her and thought, “Wow… I’m going to marry this woman.”Meanwhile, according to her, she went from “I hated this guy” to “Wait… he’s actually kind of handsome and assertive…”What can I say? It’s a gift.Exhausted, I told her, “Well, I’ll see you again soon,” and we went our separate ways, me kicking myself the entire drive home for not getting her number, and her (obviously) unable to stop thinking about me for even a single second. Lucky for me, I knew where she went to church, so I started planning.Two weeks later, I drove 30 minutes out of my way and showed up at her church again, doing my absolute best to pretend I was definitely not there for her. She had no idea.Service ended, our eyes met, and that was it, she was powerless.She came over to talk, and naturally my irresistible charm and ridiculously good looks took it from there.We talked for an hour, I joined her for lunch, and then I once again left without getting her number. I was playing hard to get, and that’s the story we’re sticking with.Finally, a friend invited me to a Labor Day get together in 2024, the same day I was supposed to be out of town. But he told me there was a chance Carissa might be there.
